New Developments: Thermometer Kit with Integral Timer simplifies Legionella Water Tests

Temperature specialists, TM Electronics (UK) Ltd asked engineers involved in water temperature testing how their job could be made easier. The feedback was unanimous - a handheld thermometer with integral timer for one and two minute running times for hot and cold water outlets.
TME's CLEGK1 Compact Legionella Temp Kit
TME listened to the comments from the 2015 Healthcare Estates Conference in October and responded quickly. Just one month on and the company is already launching the CLEGK1 Compact Legionella Temp Kit, featuring the new MM2008 Legionella Thermometer with Integral Timer and the BSKS01-S Dual Purpose Temperature Probe – all for the special introductory price of just £120.

The MM2008 features 1 minute and 2 minute countdown buttons, making it much easier to use for timing hot and cold water tests - an essential requirement for Legionnaires’ disease risk assessment, management prevention & testing to ACoP L8. The BSKS01-S has a fully waterproof construction which means it can be used for both running water and pipe surface temperature measurement.

TME prides itself on solving problem temperature applications for its customers, continuously developing new designs and improving functionality in response to just this kind of feedback. MD, Tom Sensier, explains:

“Trying to look at your watch while holding a thermometer and probe is tricky and separate timers are obviously inconvenient - so our design department got straight onto the problem, quickly coming up with a practical design solution that simplifies the whole operation.”

Main Features of the CLEGK1

  • Waterproof thermometer to IP67 (MM2008)
  • Integral Countdown Timer on Thermometer Display
  • Counts down 1 minute (Hot) and 2 minute (Cold) water running times at the touch of a button
  • Thermometer compatible with all K-Type probes with mini plug
  • High Accuracy
  • Wide temperature range
  • Waterproof dual purpose probe for liquid and surface temperature measurement (BSK01-S)

TME's Top 5 Energy Saving TIps

Here at TME, we recently came across this article on one of our favourite industry news sites, Hospitality & Catering News. Glynn Purnell’s Top 10 Energy Saving Tipsoutlines some useful hints from the Michelin star chef to help restaurants to save the planet – and their wallets – at the same time.
This is a subject close to our heart, as TME have always strived to be an eco-friendly company, so we thought we’d come up with our own Top 5 Energy Saving Tips to add to Glynn Purnell’s.

http://www.energysavingforbusinesses.co.uk/10-simple-ways-your-business-can-save-energy-and-money/
  1. We had to agree with Glynn on his first energy efficient tip – “When investing in new equipment, don’t just think of the upfront cost”. It’s easy to think that cheap = cheerful, however, if you buy throw away equipment, you're likely to find yourself throwing it away! TME's flagship MM2000 thermometers last a long time - many are regularly in use for a dozen years or more.
  2. Of course, no matter how long equipment lasts, the time always comes around when it must be added to your ever-growing mountain of waste. Unless, of course, your equipment automatically comes with TME’s Thermometer for Life guarantee, which means that not only will you never pay more than £35 for a replacement MM2000 thermometer, but also, with our returns policy, you’ll never throw an old thermometer away.
  3. Loss of heat from refrigerators and cold store doors being left open is a big issue for a lot of restaurants. One way to avoid these doors being opened and closed unnecessarily - and the temperature fluctuations that come with this - is by ensuring that your temperature logging inside these appliances can be accessed remotely. TME’s TC Wall Port is designed for this purpose. Fine wires run from a fixed sensor inside the cold store or refrigerator to the wall-mounted port - meaning that, by simply plugging your thermometer into the port, you can take an accurate, instant reading from up to 20m away - saving on loss of heat and inaccurate readings by constantly opening and closing doors when performing spot checks.
  4. Many so-called eco-friendly companies seem to slip up when it comes to the fairly easy challenge of rechargeable batteries. This is changing, but you'll be glad to read that all TME equipment has long been compatible with rechargeable batteries.
  5. UK made, UK-invented products are becoming increasingly rare, which is a real shame, especially when you consider the alternative - spending large amounts of energy on air miles and import costs. TME both designs and manufactures in the UK - to be specific, on the South Coast, in sunny Goring-by-Sea!

MD, Tom Sensier says: “Legionnaires’ disease is one of the biggest risks to healthcare estates today, so we’ve created a dedicated Legionella Temperature Range to ensure streamlined, no-fuss water temperature monitoring across the healthcare sector.”

Legionella Temperature Range:

  • Barcode Scanning Thermometer: With user programmable alarms for critical temperatures, TME’s MM7000 thermometer range provides paperless temperature logging using Barcodes, generating detailed information on each scan, including the identifying details of each test point. Traceability is no longer a problem - records can be downloaded via Bluetooth or USB to PC/PDA, using open-source software.
  • Dual Purpose Probes: The unique probe saves time and money during spot checks as it can be used for measuring both the surface temperature of pipes and the temperature of running water.
  • TC Wall Port: This remote temperature monitoring system uses discrete fine-wire sensors, which are attached to a temperature test point and left in-situ. The wires are run to the TC Wall Port, which is screwed to the wall. To take temperature readings, just ‘plug’ in a thermometer for an instant temperature reading from up to 20m away – no need to climb ladders or dismantle boxing.
  • Immersion Probe: A compact probe specially designed to be dropped into water tanks and left in situ.
  • Legionnaires’ Kits: Easy to use thermometer kits at a variety of price points in a carry case or holster for engineers on the move.
TME are proud to announce that MD Tom Sensier will also be speaking at the event, as part of the Water & Infection Control Zone set up by IHEEM with The Water Management Society, Legionella Control Association and BEAMA.

Tom will be introducing the latest technology in paperless recording systems for Legionella water temperatures, reducing the time & cost invested in water temperature monitoring using barcode scanning thermometers.

Industry news: Pop-up Restaurants

One of the hospitality industry's biggest crazes in recent years is the pop-up: Pop-up restaurants, street food concepts, cafes and bars - you name it, there's been a pop-up version of it.

A pop-up restaurant. Image from http://deadcurious.com/

Here at TME, we recently came across this article on the Food Service Equipment Journal website, written by Andrew Seymour, which discusses the potential of the street food and pop-up industry. This started us thinking about the type of equipment that pop-up kitchens are likely to need.

The pop-up restaurants that work best utilise straightforward concepts, fast service, and unusual or compact spaces. These three attributes mirror the main requirements that street food looks for in equipment: functional, fast, and compact. However, just as pop-ups provide great quality food, they need great quality equipment.

Thermometers that are used in a professional kitchen must be accurate in line with HACCP regulations, which can often narrow restaurant's options to expensive, bulky equipment. However, an easy-to-use, yet high-accuracy thermometer with built-in needle probe, such as TME's SOLO thermometer, comes with a surprisingly affordable price tag of just £45. Not only this, but for the street food movement, the SOLO's simple, no-button function, super-fast ThermaSprint technology-powered 3 second response time, and compact, pocket-size design are a perfect match.

Another key aspect of pop-up restaurants that makes them so appealing to consumers is the prevalence of locally-sourced produce. Often the supply chain is sustainable and very short, or even practically non-existent, with more and more pop-ups 'growing their own'. A shorter supply chain means better traceability and easier interactions with suppliers. This can be just as useful when it comes to equipment as it is for produce. TME is based and manufactures in the UK, and offers excellent service contracts on broken equipment, including an unparalleled next-day swap system. Perfect for this most casual of casual dining sectors.

As Seymour's article discusses, the pop-up industry has just received a huge boost from new group 'London Union', backed by Jamie Oliver and Thomasina Miers amongst others. This, together with the increasing popularity of street-food, offers the perfect platform for quality, functional equipment to shine.

Nuts to greenhouses – Smart testing solutions from TME

Smart food manufacturers were treated to live demonstrations of the latest technology in temperature data capture at this year’s IT Food & Drink Summit at the Motor Cycle Museum, Birmingham on July 7th 2015. British manufacturer, TME, showcased their range of accurate, high-quality thermometers and probes at Stand 1.
Busy stand at the show!

MD, Tom Sensier says: “The IT Summit was a great platform for our smart testing solutions and a good opportunity to explore new temperature applications on everything from the manufacture of nut glazes to zero energy greenhouses.”

TME’s MM7000 range of Barcode scanning thermometers impressed most of all, with visitors attracted to the unique combination of high accuracy temperature measurement with an integral Barcode reader. The thermometers’ ability to record high-level information about each temperature scan represents the next generation in temperature measurement.

This year, TME is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a programme of exhibitions and new product launches throughout the year: “For 25 years our formula has been the same: high-accuracy, UK-built products, affordable but with a bespoke edge. We look forward to even more success in the future as we launch some of TME’s most innovative solutions to date.”
